Seminars

June 4, 15h30 : David Berghmans, ROB
"EIT shutterless mode: operation and science"

Running the EIT in shutterless mode allows for having high-cadence images of the solar corona with a wide field of view and good signal to noise. The Royal Observatory of Belgium is leading a so-called 'EIT high-cadence synoptic program' with EIT operating in shutterless mode during two hours every 3 months. In this talk, I'll first present the rationale and the operations of this high cadence synoptic program. After that I'll make a quick tour along the scientific results that have come out, mainly in the context of micro- & nanoflares, MHD waves and plasma flows.

June   7, 10h15 : Peter Gomory (Tatranska Lomnica)
"On relations between chromospheric and transition region layers in the quiet Sun network."

New results on cross-correlation functions of the line intensities and Doppler shifts of the chromospheric He I (584.3 A) and the transition region O V (629.7 A) lines for the quiet Sun network reveal clear time lag for the line intensities in contradiction to the previously presented results in my MEDOC12 lecture. Presence of the Alfven waves in these parts of the solar atmosphere will be discussed as a possible reason of the derived properties of the investigated spectral lines.

June 9, 10h00 : Guy Artzner (IAS)
"Mercury transits ; november 15-16, 1999 and may 7, 2003 ; Venus transit ; June 8, 2004"

From 1631 to 1882 Mercury and Venus transits were used in order to measure the scale of the solar system.Since the 60's active radar measurements superseded geometrical determinations of the Astronomical Unit. Present observations of Mercury transits (Solar Physics 219 : 217-230) do help in order to determine the plate scale and the level of stray light of solar telescopes. In addition to that UV observations of Venus transits (2004-2012) may help to investigate the Cytherean atmosphere.
